The Witcher Watcher

Hello! I’m back – I apologize for being away but I’ll be honest, I let time get away from me! Looking at the calendar I almost fell off my chair when I saw it would be June next week. So I will try to write more often. I will start by telling you about my new found appreciation for video games!

About a year ago I wrote a post about watching my husband play his new video game, The Witcher 3, while I was the ‘Witcher Watcher’. Unfortunately for him, he had not chosen the correct path and ended up with the most depressing and sad ending possible! I couldn’t bear it and it bothered me so much I made the decision to play the game myself so we could have a happier ending. Well fast forward a year and I have played the The Witcher 3, TWICE! I have never been any good at doing these sort of games and I set out to truly fail…but I didn’t! To my utter surprise I gained a pretty good handle on the controls of the PS4 and was soon casting Axi while battling Ghouls, Nilfgardians and The Wild Hunt until I got the ending I wanted. I loved the game so much I played it again, only a level up. I have probably put well over 300+ hours into the game and it’s expansions, the last of which is due out next week.

I have read all the available translated books and have come to love the character of Geralt, the main character of the series. He doesn’t fit the usual mold of a hero; he makes mistakes, gets huffy and can be a plain bore sometimes but his heart is defiantly in the right place, especially when it comes to his daughter Ciri. You can’t help but forgive him when he gets caught up in a troubling situation that has usually been instigated by his trusty poet friend, Dandelion.

After finishing the game the first time I honestly felt gutted it was all over! The game has been beautifully made, the scenery is unbelievable and the story line, characters, plots and game play are enough to make you just stop for a minute a truly appreciate all the work that went into making such an award winning game. Although there is much excitement for the last expansion it is mixed with sadness as we all know, this is it. This is the last we will have of Geralt and all the wonders that have been encountered on the long trail. The creators of the game, CD Projekt Red have said this is the last game of the series, there will be no more Witcher but die-hard fans (myself included) are keeping our fingers firmly crossed there may be a new story, possibly Ciri’s story. But if that were the case we have a long wait ahead of us; the first Witcher game came out 12 years ago! The company has been working on a game called Cyberpunk 2077 and as the trailer came out a few years ago ¬†any hope of seeing Novigrad again is a distant hope.

For now I will look forward to having my ass handed to me by a rather nasty Vampire, apparently. Ekimmaras, Katakans, could be a long slog but you know what…that’s fine with me! After putting the kids to bed and cleaning the house, it’s a great way to wind down and get lost in another world…

Are there any other Witcher fans out there? Are you as excited about the newest expansion as I am?
